Another new Mr Hack and once again it is opening with sad news....this time the death of Belfast NewsLetter's political editor, Mervyn Pauley. I have found it hard to find a suitable obituary for the man.
The former political editor of the News Letter, Mervyn Pauley, cwas aged 88.
He had joined the NewsLetter staff in the 1960s and retired from the paper in 2001.
Soon after, he was given an OBE for services to journalism.
Ben Lowry, the News Letter editor, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear this news. Mervyn was a hugely respected political journalist, for example covering the Belfast Agreement for our readers. The News Letter has been publishing for 288 years and Mervyn was on the roll call of distinguished reporters."
Mervyn, indeed was cut off the same bush as another great local political correspondent now long dead, John Wallace...I remember him. He could speak as vigorously as he wrote and made sure if you were in his vicinity you heard and understood what he had to say. Long live the memories of both these great journalists.
